The Bacon Explosion Explosion

Fame is funny. Just before last Christmas, two barbecue bloggers, in response to a challenge from one of their Twitter subscribers, invented a mindbending new meal: The Bacon Explosion.

The Bacon Explosion consists of a lattice of bacon, wrapped around a bunch of sausage, which is rolled up into a fat tube of deliciousness. It is then grilled, or - ideally - smoked in a smoker. The roll as a whole clocks in with at least 5,000 calories and 500 grams of fat. Delicious, delicious fat and calories.

Once the internet got wind of the Bacon Explosion, it, well, exploded. The bloggers' site itself has been up and down, their server occasionally brought to its knees by a sudden influx of traffic. Today it seems to be down due to a huge write up on the New York Times website.

I think it is clear that if there is one thing the internet loves, it's bacon. Bacon is the hero meat of the internet, from John Scalzi's baconcat to the proliferation of bacon flavored salt. Bacon is in many ways the direct opposite of spam, which is the internet's least favorite thing. No one likes electronic spam, and few people like the real thing. But obviously, we all love bacon.

If you would like to try cooking up your own Bacon Explosion, the New York Times article has a brief overview. The actual recipe can be found here on the original site. It's down now, but check back later. C'mon - you know you want some!
