Everyone knows that in the United States, there's the West Coast and the East Coast. West coast kicks it California style, big waves, big skiing. Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre represent its essential rap game. For the East Coast, its all about Snow in the winter, politics, big business and Notorious BIG, Sugar Hill Gang and RUN DMC.
When it comes to Burgers, the East Coast is White Castle territory. Claiming a feature film and the title of World's Oldest Burger Chain, White Castle was founded in 1921 in Wichita Kansas.
The Burger:
The Original 'Slider' was served at White Castle and is characterized by its diminutive size and square patty. Topped with griddled onions and pickles, it is a tribute to simplicity. The patty is steam grilled and the idea of ordering just one of these burgers is preposterous for anyone under age 4. Available with cheese.
Founded in 1948 in Baldwin Park, California, In N Out has become famous for its California image. Using hot rods and warm summer nights as their theme and serving strictly the freshest ingredients. Another thing that makes In N Out unique is its secret menu items, the most famous of which is 'Animal Style', a mix of cheese, onions nad mustard grilled and topped over the patty. In N Out has more than a few Hollywood endorsements of its own.
The Burger (single):
The 'single' is a griddle cooked patty served with fresh lettuce, tomato and a full onion slice. A tangy 'secret sauce' seems to include ketchup, mayo and possibly diced pickles. Basic, yet high quality.
The Battle:
Sadly, for me, this is a no contest. Harold and Kumar were headed to the wrong burger joint. In N Out brings the freshest ingredients, huge taste and style I can get behind. White Castle's burger is sorta this sad little droopy steamed thing. Although it's nice to be able to throw a few sliders back, nothing beats biting into that hot burger, fresh onion slice, tomato and lettuce.
