It should come as no surprise to learn that commercial chicken meat contains arsenic. I mean, we have seen time and again how our government chooses deep pockets over consumer safety, but this just seems so outrageous, even for Sam to allow.
The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy found levels of inorganic arsenic in chicken as far back as 2006, but the FDA still would not admit the truth until this year. Even then, they are saying the levels of arsenic in chicken bound for our table are small and not dangerous. Given the fact that arsenic accumulates in the system, I don’t see how they can expect us to believe that lie.
Pfizer, a producer of one of the arsenic drugs used in chicken feed, has voluntarily pulled the drug in the United States, but not in other countries. How very big of them. Arsenic is supposed to help increase chicken growth and prevent a common disease called coccidiosis. The European Union has banned this, so why is it still okay here in the States?
Both the agriculture industry and the FDA are counting on us to once again turn a blind eye to the atrocious acts they commit in the name of profit. This makes yet another compelling reason to start shopping locally and finding alternative sources for meat. If you cannot buy organic, healthy meat locally, start growing your own. Even city dwellers can often legally own a few chickens, and you will not taste a better chicken than one you raise at home without harmful chemicals.
